Being researcher-designers, we are concerned with both the methodological and practical aspects of design. Design as a methodology offers theoretical frameworks such as social innovation, infrastructuring, service design and systems design. These frameworks are useful for articulating the kind of collaborative research processes needed to solve wicked problems. In practice, design offers generative tools such as: DOS (design oriented scenarios); PSS (product-service-systems) and HCD (human-centred-design) among others. Such tools are useful for visualizing ideas and eliciting participation in collaborative exercises.
In using these methods and tools, we acknowledge that everyone is in effect a designer of their own life; Our work as researcher-designers is to enhance and visualise design agency, which we believe is inherent in all of us.
